Rocky Hill is where we see filtration soiling more than anywhere else on the route, and almost nobody recognises it for what it is. A house of this era is not airtight, and the return side of the heating system pulls air toward it from everywhere in the building. Where that air is forced through a narrow gap — the perimeter of a rug lying on a hard floor, the line under a closed door, the edge of a step-down — the rug fibre acts as the filter, and every fine particle in the air is deposited into it. What you get is a sharp dark line an inch or two wide following the rug's outline, and it is not dirt on the surface: it is soot-fine particulate driven into the pile from the side. People scrub at it, decide the rug is stained, and stop. It comes out, but it comes out in a proper wash rather than under a machine, and it will come back unless the airflow or the pad changes. The sunken den does the rest: a rug down in a well nobody lifts collects everything the room sheds.
