What Bearden is built from
The Kingston Pike corridor west of Sequoyah Hills, running out past Homberg to Northshore. Mid-century brick ranches and split-levels on the side streets, older cottages closer to the pike, and a steady run of infill and townhouse building along the main road.
A mixed, settled part of west Knoxville, and the part of it with the strongest secondhand trade — the antique and consignment cluster around Homberg and Kingston Pike means a good share of the rugs in these houses were bought used, locally, from somebody who did not know their history either.
The Bearden problem
A secondhand rug arrives with a past, and most of the work in Bearden is undoing what somebody already did. The recurring finds are the same ones every time: a rug that was washed once with something far too alkaline, so the wool has lost its lanolin and now soils again within months; dye that migrated during that wash and was never corrected, leaving pink haloes where red met ivory; a repair done in the wrong wool at the wrong knot density that is now standing proud of the field; and a hand-tufted rug sold as hand-knotted, whose latex layer is at the end of its life and announces itself as an old-glue smell in a warm room. None of that is visible from the front on a shop floor. It is all visible from the back, which is the first thing we do at intake, and it is worth knowing before you spend money on a rug rather than after.
