What Hardin Valley is built from
The fastest-growing corner of west Knox County, between Pellissippi Parkway and Oak Ridge, built out with large two-storey subdivision houses from the 2000s onward. Open plans downstairs on engineered wood or luxury vinyl plank, carpeted bedrooms upstairs, and almost every plan carrying a bonus room over the garage.

The Hardin Valley problem
The bonus room over the garage is where rugs go wrong here, and it is a design problem rather than a housekeeping one. That floor is built over an unconditioned garage, it is at the far end of the duct run from a system sized for the rooms below it, and the door gets shut for weeks at a time. So it swings: hot and humid in July, dry and cold in January, and the air in it barely moves. A wool rug in that room takes on moisture through the summer with nothing to release it to, and then goes through a hard contraction in winter that ripples the foundation. It is also dark, still and undisturbed for months, which is what clothes moths are looking for, and because nobody is in there it gets found late — usually when somebody finally lifts a corner. The other thing is size. The enormous machine-made rug that suits an open plan is heavy and is almost never lifted, so everything the household walks in stays underneath it. Open the bonus room, move that rug twice a year, and most of this stops happening.
