What Island Home Park is built from
A compact early-twentieth-century neighborhood on the south bank of the Tennessee River opposite downtown, planned from around 1912 and mostly built out with Craftsman bungalows and foursquares through the 1920s, with Island Home Airpark and Ijams Nature Center at the far end of it.
Owner-occupied and close-knit, and unusually outdoor-facing even by Knoxville standards: the South Loop trails, the greenway and the Ijams trailheads all start inside walking distance, so bikes, dogs and boots come and go through the front door all year.
The Island Home Park problem
What arrives on the rugs here is not household soil. It is trail soil, and there are two problems with it. The first is that it comes in wet for most of the year and gets walked in rather than swept up, so it goes straight past the surface to the base of the pile. The second, and the one people do not expect, is oil. Chain lubricant, suspension grease and brake residue transfer off a bike frame onto whatever it leans against and off a wheel onto whatever it rolls over, and an oily mark behaves nothing like a dry stain: it will not lift under a vacuum, it spreads outward every time somebody rubs at it, and it becomes a magnet that pulls new soil into a widening grey halo for months afterwards. Oil has to be dissolved out with a solvent matched to the fibre before the rug goes anywhere near water, because water alone will simply move it around.
